Shih Ing Chan, more widely known as Si Chan, was born in 1975 in Penang, and graduated with a Diploma in Fine Arts (Malaysia) and Degree in Interior Design (London, UK). Si Chan joined Urban Sketchers Penang in 2014 and is an active member of the Penang Watercolour Society. She doodles freely with bold lines en Plein-air to capture the rhythm and movement of city life with bustling human activity.

Her formal training in structure and design also provides a professional element to her sketches. Si Chan comments that Plein-air sketches allowed her to develop good observation and discover a personality in her sketches.

This workshop will introduce simple sketching principles starting from lines, forms, negative and positive composition space which are related to perspective rhythm. We will explore the lines in rhythm and forms in tone volume, combining both elements at the first stage. Then we will develop compositions using negative and positive space to create shadow value in black and white in the second stage.

Lastly, we will combine all the simple elements into a perspective rhythm (from one point to two-point) and share the panorama perspectives.

What to bring: your favorite sketching tools. Si Chan will bring carpenter pencils. The organizer will provide 300-gsm paper.
